About Us

Our mission is to bring joy, through our love of East Med hospitality.

From delicious evening mezze and cocktails to relaxed weekend brunches (hangovers optional!), at Brother Marcus we want you to feel like part of our gang as soon as you walk through the door.

Our founders Tasos Gaitanos and Alex Large have travelled the East Med extensively to experience its vibrant food and lively culture first-hand, bringing the bold flavours of the region back to London. Brother Marcus is our take on true East Med hospitality - all about generosity and good times.

And the name? While our dishes draw on Tas’ Cretan and Cypriot heritage, we borrowed the name from Alex’s legendary little brother Marcus, who makes friends with just about everyone he meets. What better way to capture the warmth of the East Med than to name our restaurants after him?

Our Story

2016
Brother Marcus is born in April 2016. Alex, Arthur and Tas got the keys for an old greasy spoon on the Sunday and were serving their first brunches on the Thursday. What was supposed to be a pop-up gained some traction and by filling the space with brunch guests during the day and events at night Brother Marcus made a name for itself.
2017
2017 saw Brother Marcus grow; their loyal followers multiplied, supper clubs gained momentum and the weekend brunch queues got even longer. Brother Marcus’ own Cretan inspired supper clubs lit the spark of the idea of a second restaurant.
2018
Balham was crowned ‘Best Brunch in London’ by Time Out which came just before the lease for Angel was signed and the keys were in hand. This time the Brother Marcus boys, and their now experienced team, had six days instead of the previous four to turn the site around. Brother Marcus Angel opened in June 2018 with a more grownup and refined menu but of course, the brunches maintained their cult following.
2019
With two restaurants running and a growing fanbase across North and South London, Brother Marcus looked East. After a trip to Crete to meet suppliers and visit the village where Tas grew up, the lease for Spitalfiled was signed. With a longer timeframe to refit the site, and a design team, Brother Marcus Spitalfields opened its doors to East London in November 2019.
2020/2021
In January a trip to Istanbul gave some focus for the year ahead, however, Covid forced Brother Marcus to close. Over 12 months the restaurants opened and closed nine times in total with the team taking it in their stride. 2020 has pushed Brother Marcus to the edge but its resilience has only proven that Brother Marcus is here for the long haul.
2022
What a year! In 2022 Brother Marcus opened two restaurants. The first being in Borough Yards, an exciting and buzzing new development next to Borough Market. Next up, Brother Marcus went West! With the second opening in South Kensington. Our smallest site yet.
